Promoting with Auctions

Question: What is the number one reason why people go to eBay?

.

.

.

.

Answer: TO BUY SOMETHING

eBay now has a classified ad feature that many marketers have been having using with great success. Its real purpose is not to actually sell anything but to educate people about a service or product(s) you have and then to have the customer contact you for more information.

Used properly, this is a very inexpensive advertising method. A classified ad will cost around $20.00 for 30 days.
Just think about this for a second. eBay boasts having 233 million users worldwide. At any given time there are 104 million listing worldwide. Where else are you going to find a huge gathering of buyers like that.

I’m going to warn you - working with eBay is like working with Google adwords - its a process that needs to be learned. Their sole purpose is to collect your money - just like a hotel casino, they want your cash.

Having said that, there are a set of rules and some of the rules are a little vague, but its not difficult to work the system to your advantage. You need to think of eBay as an advertising avenue - a means to an end.

If eBay doesn’t thrill you, there are a couple other auction sites to use as advertising.

  • Bidville - this is a warm friendly community - almost like a giant neighborhood garage sale.
  • UBid - this is a new concept in auctions - the products are from a multitude of merchants but they are all under the collective of Ubid. This means as a buyer, your purchase is “guaranteed” to be BS (you read it correctly) free.
  • Overstock.com - Another auction site -I don’t recommend using Overstock. They have a high non sale rate and they really can’t seem to get their auction organized. For the expense you are better off using the smaller auctions.

    Hi Debbie,

I used the ebay classified for 3 ads for 3 months…I think I should have taken something said above to heart before hand. Writing ebay ads for the purpose of collecting email address must need to be learned.

My ROI was…lets say less than spectacular…not a complete failure, but some rubbin & polishin in some areas is needed.

I think that jus maybe craigslist may be a better spot to hone one’s ad writing skills, with an eye towards movin uP to eBay once what’s required to make an ad really pull is perfected.

No where is it more true than an ad that it’s jus so very important to test…test…test…
